  • Country: Australia
  • Year: 2017
  • Price: $5.49
  • Review: (www.wespeakwine.com) Lindeman’s Bin 45 Cabernet Sauvignon features ruby red with a plum core, cassis and bramble fruit aromas meld with dark fruit notes and subtle spicy oak and hints of chocolate and mint on the palate.
  • Your review: Deep, dark red. Hearty smell of blackberries and cherries. Slightly acidic, diluted body.
  • Not paired with food, drank it after dessert.

Tasting 21 - Cavebitch Red

  • Name: Savage Winery - Cavebitch Red
  • Variety: Chambourcin
  • Region: Erie, New York
  • Country: USA
  • Year: None mentioned
  • Price: $20
  • Review: (www.savagewinery.com) This dry red wine is made from Chambourcin grapes. It has notes of black cherry and chocolate with high acidity and low tannins. This wine has a wonderful smooth finish.
  • Your review: ***Interesting fact*** about Chambourcin grapes - the juice is actually pink or red, not clear like all other grapes. A deep, red wine. Plum and cherry aromas. Nice, smooth feel in the mouth. Surprising to find a nice red in New York.
  • Not paired with food, it was a tasting at the Broadway Market in Buffalo.

Tasting 20 - Pink Savage

  • Name: Savage Winery - Pink Savage
  • Variety: Pink Catawba
  • Region: Erie, New York
  • Country: USA
  • Year: None mentioned
  • Price: $12.95
  • Review: (www.vivino.com) Sweet and tart. A perfect summer wine.
  • Your review: A rose wine. This wine is overpoweringly sweet. Jammy, with a very strong flavor of grape juice. Don't think I would buy it.
  • Not paired with food, it was a tasting at the Broadway Market in Buffalo.

Tasting 19 - Pechette

  • Name: Victoria Cellars - Pechette
  • Variety: White blend
  • Region: Niagara, New York
  • Country: USA
  • Year: None mentioned
  • Price: $12.95
  • Review: (www.elmaliquor.com) Today I am tasting wines from Victorianbourg Wine Estate in Niagara County, New York. These are all slightly flavored wines but they are made with New York State grapes to start with. The first one up that I’m going to be tasting is the Pechette which is a Chardonnay based wine, flavored with real white peaches grown in New York State. It smells like peaches right away, that very ripe peach aroma which is nice. You can faintly smell the Chardonnay underneath and it has a slight frizzante to it. Like a little very light effervescence, which adds to the flavors. You can sense that there’s a flavor of Chardonnay underneath which makes it not just a sugary, too sweet of a wine. It adds some complexity to it as well. This is very nice and very refreshing chilled for the summer time.
  • Your review: Just the slightest tinge of yellow color. Peach aroma prominent, with a sort of light grape juice flavor coming through. Light and refreshing in the mouth. Did not detect any effervescence.
  • Not paired with food, it was a tasting at the Broadway Market in Buffalo.

Tasting 18 - Alamos Malbec

  • Name: Alamos - Malbec
  • Variety: Malbec
  • Region: Mendoza
  • Country: Argentina
  • Year: 2017
  • Price: Not sure - served by my host.
  • Review: (www.winemag.com) A classically Argentine wine, Alamos Malbec blends the country’s signature variety – Malbec – and its hypnotic aromas of violets and deep, full flavors of plum with small portions of Syrah and Bonarda to add dark cherry and blackberry flavors. Deft oak usage adds layers of complexity with smoothly-integrated tones of spice and vanilla. The full, firm structure and balanced tannins create a rich mouthfeel and expansive finish, and an entirely unforgettable wine.
  • Your review: Deep purple and clear. Prominent aroma and taste of plum. Felt a little diluted in the mouth, but treate balanced and smooth nonetheless. A very nice wine.
  • Paired with pecorino, ziti with tomato sauce and meatballs.

Wine in the National Gallery of Art

As we all know, wine was prominent at the Last Supper. Here is the way Tintoretto portrayed it.

The whole painting.

Tasting 17 - Horse Heaven Hills - Red Blend Les Chevaux

  • Name: Horse Heaven Hills - Red Blend Les Chevaux
  • Variety: Red Blend
  • Region: Columbia Valley, Washington
  • Country: USA
  • Year: 2015
  • Price: Not sure - served by my host.
  • Review: (www.winemag.com) The mint, green herb, vanilla and blackberry aromas are elusive. The flavors are lightly styled, with a sweet finish.
  • Your review: Medium red color and clear. Detected a smooth creaminess that I hadn't sensed in a red wine before. A little spicy.
  • Paired with pastas with meat sauce, pesto.  Roasted sweet peppers, chicken and mushrooms.

Tasting 16 - Satis Dei

  • Name: Satis Dei
  • Variety: Syrah - 55%, Grenache - 45%
  • Region: Tierra di Castilla
  • Country: Spain
  • Year: 2016
  • Price: Not sure - served by my host.
  • Review: (www.traderjoes.com) As the name says, it’s a blend of two grapes that are giants of the Spanish wine scene: both the Syrah and the Garnacha grapes were grown in the Tierra de Castilla region, located in the very heart of the country. The 55% Syrah brings big body and quite the pronounced structure, including upfront tannins. The 45% Garnacha contributes a nice counterbalance to those tannins, along with red fruit tones. Overall, the aromatic, fruity profile—with touches of oak and a long, intense finish—promises to make quite the impression on whoever is around when you drink it..
  • Your review: Medium red color and clear. Strong tannins and fruitiness. Not overpowering alcohol.
  • Paired grilled eggplant, zucchini, fried tofu, and spicy garbanzo beans.

Tasting 15 - Head Snapper Radiant Red Blend

  • Name: It's a Head Snapper Radiant Red Blend
  • Variety: Blend of red grapes, bottle didn't say
  • Region: Livermore, California
  • Country: USA
  • Year: Not shown
  • Price: Not sure - served by my host.
  • Review: (www.tastings.com) Black garnet color. Fruity aromas of toasted fruit cake with butter, marzipan, and vanilla fudge with a slightly chewy, soft, fruity medium-full body and a smooth, captivating, breezy black licorice and spiced tea finish with crunchy tannins and moderate oak flavor. A full-bodied red that will be a nice wine for the winter holidays.
  • Your review: Dark in color and tannic. Aromas of berries and cherries.
  • Paired with cheese and crackers and olives.

Tasting 14 - Kirkland Prosecco

  • Name: Kirkland Prosecco
  • Variety: Most likely Glera, but bottle didn't say
  • Region: Asolo, Veneto
  • Country: Italy
  • Year: Not shown
  • Price: Not sure - gift.  Probably ~$7.
  • Review: (costcowineblog.com) The Kirkland Prosecco is a DOCG wine, the highest quality designation that a Prosecco can have because it's both controlled (controllata) and guaranteed (guarantita). ... Having only 11% ABV and being “extra dry” according to the back label, this wine is light, fruity, and with just a hint of sweetness.
  • Your review: Nice, tiny bubbles, perfect sweetness, fruity taste.
  • Paired with cheese and crackers, but kept drinking it with the chicken parmesan.

Tasting 13 - Barboursville Virginia Merlot

  • Name: Barboursville Vineyards, Virginia Merlot
  • Variety: Merlot
  • Region: Barboursville, Albemarle County, Virginia
  • Country: USA
  • Year: 2017
  • Price: $14.99.
  • ReviewNo review found, but here are the winemakers notes: Established as one of the estate’s most important and consistent varietals, this classic Merlot is one of our most popular wines, for its very gratifying palate and food pairing manners. Supple, silky, yet with attractive tannic grip, the wine is forthcoming with luscious aromas and flavors which suggest it most frequently in everyday dining, and when a glass by itself is desired..
  • Your review: Medium body, dark berry and earthy aroma.  Mild in the mouth, a little on the dry side. Pleasant after taste.
  • Paired with a Tuscan kale and mushroom stew.

Tasting 12 - Rosso di Montalcino

  • Name: Casanova di Neri, Rosso di Montalcino
  • Variety: Sangiovese
  • Region: Tuscany
  • Country: Italy
  • Year: 2013
  • Price ? Served at a friend's house.
  • Review (klwines.com): Dried cherry, fruitcake, and fennel come out on the nose of this Rosso di Montalcino. A hint of mint accents the juicy cherry notes on the palate, which shows good depth of flavor. There’s lots of youthful vitality here yet, though the tannins are fine enough to make this approachable now.
  • Your review: Medium body, kind of acid in a not pleasant way. Fruity aromas not too strong.
  • Paired with a plate of liguine and clam sauce.

Tasting 11 - Chianti

  • Name: Straccali Chianti
  • Variety: Merlot, Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero
  • Region: Chianti
  • Country: Italy
  • Year: 2014
  • Price ? Served at a friend's house.
  • Review (wine.com): Straccali Chianti is vibrant ruby red in color. On the nose the wine is bright with youthful aromas of ripe red fruit. On the palate, velvety and refreshing with good structure.
  • Your review: Medium bodied, dry, intense and herbal.
  • Paired with a thick lentil, sweet potato stew. I think I would have rather tried it with the lamb.

Tasting 10 - Ancient Vines Cline

  • Name: Ancient Vines Cline
  • Variety: Zinfandel
  • Region: Contra Costa County, California
  • Country: USA
  • Year: 2016
  • Price ? Served at a friend's house.
  • Review (wine.com): The 2016 Ancient Vines Zinfandel shows spicy, bright strawberry, with coffee and chocolate characters. Ripe fruit and soft tannins make this a mouth-coating rich vintage. Aging on new and used oak has lent this wine a subtle vanilla quality that nicely complements the explosive fruit notes.
  • Your review: Full bodied.  Balanced between sweet and dry, leaning toward dry. Dark, fruity aroma. Tried to taste vanilla but couldn't detect it.
  • Paired with a lamb stew that stood up well to it.

Tasting 9 - Robert Mondavi Private Selection

  • Name: Robert Mondavi Private Selection
  • Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Region: Monterey County, California
  • Country: USA
  • Year: 2017
  • Price ? Served at a friend's house.
  • Review (totalwine.com): Layered and complex... leaps from the glass with aromas of blackberry cobbler, graham cracker, brown sugar, milk chocolate, coffee and smoke. Palate of blueberry pie, praline, sweet vanilla custard, caramel and mocha is framed by soft chewy tannins and a hint of toasted oak.
  • Your review: Full and jammy on the nose.  Unique richness in the mouth from the bourbon barrel aging, I guess.
  • Paired with a pasta in a rich, tomato, meat sauce.

Tasting 8 - Angeline Merlot Reserve

•Name: Angeline Merlot Reserve
•Variety: Merlot
•Region: Winery - Russian River Valley, Vineyard - Paso Robles
•Country: France
•Year: 2015
•Price ? Gift
•Review (wine.com): Staying nicely in its sweet spot, the smooth and pleasingly-layered 2015 Angeline Merlot exhibits black fruit and sandalwood in its aromas and flavors. The ripe tannins in the finish make it a match with grilled ribeye.
•Dark red in color, plum and jammy aroma. Big wine with lots of body.
•Served with a cheezy broccoli soup - overpowered it a little.

Tasting 7 - La Vieille Ferme Rose

•Name: La Vieille Ferme
•Variety: Chardonnay
•Region: Rhone Valley
•Country: France
•Year: 2017
•Price ? Gift
•Review (Wine & Spirits): The Perrin family of Château Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape make this wine at their estate in Ventoux, blending equal parts cinsault and grenache with 20 percent syrah. The 2017, from the driest vintage they’ve experienced in 30 years, is firm and crisp, with tangy berry flavors playing over a stony savor that holds the wine long and clean.
•Light and well balanced, raspberry and apple, refreshing with just a bit of sweetness remaining.
•Paired nicely with hummus and pretzels.

Tasting 6 - Josh

•Name: Josh
•Variety: Chardonnay
•Region: Russian River, California
•Country: USA
•Year: 2017
•Price $11.50
•Review (totalwine.com): Aromas of apple, pear, vanilla, and butter. The fresh citrus and tropical fruit flavors blend smoothly with the creamy butter, vanilla, and toasty flavors of barrel fermentation.
•Your review: Fruity in aroma, but creamy and smooth in the mouth.
•Did not drink this with food, and it was fine by itself.

Tasting 5 - La Crema

•Name: La Crema
•Variety: Chardonnay
•Region: Monterey
•Country: USA
•Year: 2016
•Price $18
•Review (Wine Enthusiast): Rounded aromas of ripe pear, orange skins, poached apple and buttered toast with marmalade show on the nose of this bottling.
•Your review: This is a nice, creamy, buttery mellow wine with nice staying power. Not something I would want to guzzle.
•This wine is delightful by itself, which is how we drank it.

Tasting 2-4

Tasting 2.

Still at the spot in DC.  This came with the food.  Strong, full taste.  Made me glad I wasn't driving.

Tasting 3.

This bottle of prosecco is sold at Safeway.  It's decent, but not great.  Perfect for an Aperol spritz, though, which is how we served it to our friends.

Tasting 4.

Had this one with dinner.  Some friends brought it over.  We didn't really have time to "let it breathe" before serving it, and I hadn't yet watched the Swirl and Sip video, so I don't think I let this wine open up as much as I could have, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

Tasting 1

Tasting

1. A sparkling wine.

This was nice, light, fruity, with tiny bubbles.  Happy hour prices at a place in Washington, DC.

Blog initialization

I first fell in love with wine in a huge fest tent with a couple hundred of my closest friends at a wine festival in Worms, Germany.  While living in Germany, I really came to enjoy whites almost exclusively (as well as the beer).  I didn't really try to determine what varieties I preferred, but sampled many.  Once in a while would order an Ebbelwoi (local dialect for apple wine) spritz.  Also made sure to become familiar with many of the various Schnapps - distilled wines of various fruits.

Later I started to introduce more red wine and now my preference seems to be seasonal - red in cold weather and white when it's warm outside.  I very much like to have a glass of Prosecco as an aperitif.

I have been lucky enough to visit wine estates for tastings in Virginia, the Finger Lakes, Italy, France, Germany, and Moldova.  But I always approached them as a neophyte.  I could tell what I liked, but was never sure that I was appreciating all that the wines had to offer.

My favorite kind of wine tasting is to invite four or five friends over to my house, have them all bring 6 wine glasses and a bottle in a brown bag, and have a "blind" taste test.  With a prize for the winner

In this course I hope to learn how to really appreciate the taste of wine, and understand how to pair wine with food.  And I am really excited to learn about how and why local conditions can impart unique characteristics on their wines.
